Globalization can also connect with imperialism on this level because the Europeans forced their way into the Congo, enslaved natives and claimed the land as theirs to build on. When ivory became popular everywhere thats when globalization happened. Europeans wanted to have ivory in their part of the world after they went and found it. The Congo has an abundance of elephants which means tusks of ivory to use. Ivory plays into globalization through the example in Heart of Darkness. They also start to enslave natives and force them into a new world being placed on top of their own. The Europeans start getting greedy and forces the natives into a new way of giving and recieving goods. The story that Marlow tells of his journey to the Congo prominantly shows how Europeans are trying to remake Europe and make the Congo a new place to live, trade, and prosper.Īn example of globalization is how the Europeans decide to start a trade post for ivory. Globalization is shown in the book, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad in the center of the story.
